Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

The monastery dates from the eighth century and was founded by the Pala ruler Dharmapala. It is one of the largest Buddhist monastic complexes in the subcontinent, covering roughly 27 acres, with a central shrine, smaller stupas and residential cells for monks laid out around a great quadrangle.

It remained a renowned centre of learning until the twelfth century, and its architecture influenced Buddhist building as far away as Cambodia.

How to get there About 5 km from Badalgachhi in Naogaon; buses run from Naogaon and Bogura.
