The shrine stands at Dargapara, beside the Padma. It holds the grave of Shah Makhdum Rupos, the Sufi saint associated with the spread of Islam into the Varendra region in the thirteenth century.
The shrine draws visitors throughout the year and is one of the most visited religious sites in the city. Rajshahi's airport, Shah Makhdum Airport, is named after him.
