Kumar Sarat Kumar Ray of the Dighapatia family of Natore was the founder and president of the Varendra Research Society, established in 1910.
With Akshay Kumar Maitreya and Ramaprasad Chanda he set out to study and preserve the history of the Varendra region. The museum they opened in Rajshahi in April 1910 was the first in what was then East Bengal.
