Rampur Boalia: the town before the city
The name Rajshahi is newer than the place. Before it, this was Rampur Boalia, named after an administrative office set up in 1825.

The area came to be known as Rampur Boalia after an administrative office was established here in 1825.
Where Boalia itself comes from is not settled. One belief traces it to the words for perfume and for a saint possessing spiritual power - a reading that would connect the name to the shrine by the river. Nothing about the origin is definitely known, and it is more honest to say so than to choose a story.
What is certain is that the administrative town of 1825 is the seed the modern city grew from: the school followed in 1828, the college in 1873, the university in 1953.
