Pakistani forces entered the University of Rajshahi campus on 14 April 1971. They first made their headquarters at the university guesthouse, Juberi Bhaban, and later moved to Dr Zoha Hall, which was used as a camp until they withdrew on the night of 18 December.

Three teachers of the university were killed: Professor Mir Abdul Qaiyum of the psychology department, Professor Sukharanjan Samaddar of the language department, and Professor Habibur Rahman of the mathematics department.

On 2 January 1972, weeks after the war ended, the university opened the Shaheed Smriti Sangrahashala - the first museum in the country devoted to the Liberation War. It still stands on the campus where these things happened.
